Report estimates public health emergency’s economic toll at almost 3% of GDP in 2015
America’s opioid scourge is exacting an economic toll in the hundreds of billions of dollars a year, a report from Donald Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers said, weeks after the president declared the situation a public health emergency.
The report from the CEA estimated the crisis to have cost the US economy $504bn in 2015, or 2.8 per cent of gross domestic product. That is six times the cost estimated in another recent study, with the difference driven by the White House economists’ decision to incorporate the value of the lives lost into their estimates.
